ASPHALT DRIVEWAY MAINENANCE

The following are common causes that affect or damage your asphalt surface. In this guideline We have provide remedy methods for each cause.

Petroleum Based Products

The surface is bonded together with bitumen so is prone to damage if any petroleum based product (i.e. petrol, turpentine etc) is spilt on the surface.

To prevent damage occurring avoid using these products on the new surface.

Should an accidental spillage occur, mop up excess immediately with a cloth.

Do not rub the surface, rinse with clean water.

Oil and Grease etc

Oil spills are best cleaned up immediately. Soak up excess with a dry cloth then cover the area with a dry absorbent material (dry dust, dry soil or sawdust). Leave on the spot for several minutes then clean off. Repeat this until the excess oil is absorbed.

- Once excess oil is removed clean the surface with hot soapy water and a brush then rinse with cold water.

Sharp objects / Heavy loading

Asphaltic Concrete takes several months to harden properly.

Sharp objects such as motor cycle stands, table / chair legs, trailer drawbars, barbeque legs etc will leave permanent indentations in the new surface.

To avoid this place blocks under the sharp objects to spread the load until the new surface has had time to harden properly.

Turning / Skidding

Due to the asphalt taking several months to harden, modern cars with power steering are prone to scuffing the surface if the wheels are turned while the car is stationary. This loosens and weakens the new surface, reducing its expected life.

The best way to prevent this happening is to ensure the vehicle is moving when turning and take it easy when braking.

Summer, in hot conditions asphalt can soften, extra care is required to prevent damage to the surface.

Dirt Marks

The surface of asphaltic concrete is textured, therefore, the fine dirt particles tend to get into voids in the surface leaving dirty looking marks.

Washing the surface with soapy water and a brush will improve the look of the surface but the marks will still show faintly for the next few months.

Animal faecal matter and decomposition of small animals (e.g. worms, slugs) can eat away at the asphalt surface and will leave a permanent mark so remove these from the surface as soon as they are seen for at least the first two – three months.

Tree Roots

Tree roots can cause the surface to lift and crack as they grow under the drive / car park. Avoid placing trees too close to the drive. Roots of mature trees tend to extend to the drip line of the tree.

IF THE ABOVE GUIDELINES ARE FOLLOWED IT WILL HELP TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A SURFACE THAT WILL LAST AND LOOK GOOD FOR YEARS TO COME
